SAVE SPODDEN VALLEY

650 homes and a children’s nursery
on the world’s largest asbestos textile factory?

Is this a SICK JOKE?

Asbestos was processed on the former Turner Brothers (T&N) site
for over 100 years.

T&N documents from 1957 record 300 tonnes of asbestos dust a year
being dumped.

T&N workers witnessed asbestos being dumped on site and down an
old coalmine.

Exposed asbestos waste can be seen dumped on the site. (The Leader
of Rochdale Council, our new MP Paul Rowen and our previous MP
Lorna Fitzsimons have seen it for themselves).

This is what the developers’ site report has to say:
“of particular note is the absence of any asbestos contamination”
What do you think?

A National Health and Safety Commissioner (and former T&N Health
and Safety Manager) has said the felling of trees and disturbing of soil
on the site is “sheer madness” and "With the potential amount of
asbestos on that site, no development should be built on this land”.

Inhaling asbestos can cause the terminal cancer mesothelioma and
lung cancer. It can take between 10 - 50 years after asbestos exposure
before people become ill. The Health and Safety Executive say there is
no safe minimum exposure level to asbestos.

Lethal asbestos fibres are invisible to the eye. Once airborne, fibres
can travel for miles. Published scientific reports conclude there may be
a TEN TIMES cancer risk up to 2 kilometres from a source of asbestos
dust and measurable risks 5 kilometres away.

The developers’ plans say about 30,000 tonnes of asbestos factory
are to be demolished and crushed into rubble on site then used for
foundations. No public health risk? What do you think?

Wildlife habitats?
Hundreds of trees were destroyed in May 2004. Many more remain
threatened.
Why hasn't there been a prosecution?
The Forestry Commission say there wasn’t enough evidence! (this was
after it banned its Officers from the site fearing asbestos contamination)
Destroy woodland habitats, avoid prosecution and profit from a Planning
Application?
What do you think?

Traffic?
Imagine over 7500 lorries delivering 170,000 cubic metres of “infill” to
the site?
Will wagons carrying asbestos waste from the site be passing your door?
How much additional traffic could be generated from 650 homes plus
businesses?
1200+ additional vehicles coming from the site every day feeding onto
your roads?
Norden, Caldershaw, Greave, Shawclough and Spotland must be affected?
The developers’ report says traffic levels won’t increase!
What do you think?

..................................................................................................................................................

This is a non-political campaign that has
the broad support of all parties.

Rochdale Council have formed a Working Party to investigate the
history of the TBA site and the ecology of the Spodden Valley.
Do you have any information or want to voice an opinion?
They want to hear from you!
Cllr. Wera Hobhouse 01706 632904.
Cllr. Tom Stott 01706 522584.
Cllr. Elwyn Watkins 01706 350349

In a democracy it is YOUR RIGHT to be heard!

IRRESPONSIBLE development of this site could kill.
This is no ordinary “brownfield” site.
It’s up to YOU to help keep Rochdale safe for generations to come.
